☀️ ☕ 😊 Goooooodmorning!! Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, so I wanted to start with this link to Niagara Frontier Publications article about overdose in Erie County. Some of the other information I have for you today includes:

And in terms of live music, which is one of my passions, there’s a lot of different options for tonight!

🌬️ First, let’s talk about weather: Pretty cloudy morning with high winds in the late afternoon, giving way into a sunnier evening. High: 75 Low: 58.

Here are the top stories today in Buffalo:

1.) Buffalo’s Cedarland Development Group is partnering with a Rochester supportive housing developer to create affordable housing options near the Broadway Market through a $20.5 million project. The designated 38 vacant lots are scattered along Plater street, allowing the developers to create multiple housing options varying from apartment complexes to single-family patio-homes. The housing produced by the project will have 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom options, as well as provide supportive services, such as case-management and care through the Matt Urban Center.

To learn more, read the article here at The Buffalo News.

2.) Every classroom in Erie County has a HEPA air filter for the upcoming school year. Dr. Gale Burstein, Erie County Department of Health Commissioner is optimistic that the air filtration, alongside knowledge of general Covid protocols like staying home when you’re feeling sick, should result in schools seeing a lower rate of transmission this year. The filtration will also be generally useful for the school, making the air consistently clearer and benefiting those who suffer from allergies.

3.) Construction has begun on the $11.5 million expansion project at the West Side Bazaar. “The West Side Bazaar has given disadvantaged entrepreneurs the opportunity to turn their dreams into reality,” Gov. Kathy Hochul commented about the grant and project. The Bazaar will be moving locations to Niagara Street, hopefully allowing that neighborhood and the vendors’ businesses to thrive.

For more information and more comments from government officials, read Niagara Frontier Publications.

4.) University at Buffalo’s 2022-23 Distinguished Speaker Series lineup announced. The intellectually diverse season will include actors Ken Jeung and Selma Blair, Marie Yovanovitch, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, and civil rights attorney Sherrilyn Ifill. The university’s president, Satish K. Tripathi, expresses pride in the tradition of Distinguished Speakers, saying that it continues to bring resonant and relevant voices to the city.

To learn more about the speakers, read the press release at the university’s News Center.

5.) A woman-owned Buffalo design company, Dot + Line, is to create window art exhibits for this year’s Curtain Up!, the celebration of the Theater district’s 2022-23 season opening. The seven total exhibits, three window displays and four street exhibits, are themed around moxie, which is defined as a determinant force of character. All the pieces center around the societal role of women in patriarchal culture.

Check out Buffalo Rising for more information about the exhibits.

👩‍🎤 And an extra fun story! This season of America’s Got Talent features South Buffalo native, Jaden Coronado, in the vocal group Acapop Kids. Read more at WGRZ.
